The size of the Japanese Bitcoin exchange market surpassed that of China and the US, overtaking two major markets to become the largest Bitcoin exchange market in the world with a $135 mln daily trading volume and over 50 percent market share.

A whole variety of factors have contributed to such an exceptional growth. However, after careful consideration of major events that have occurred in 2016, the decline of the Chinese market and introduction of sound, practical regulations from the Japanese government might have had the strongest impact on the growth of the Japanese Bitcoin industry.  READ MORE

(2/16/2017)  7 Asian Banks Investigating Bitcoin and Blockchain Tech

Until recently, there was a noticeable lack of interest in bitcoin and the blockchain among the financial institutions of Asia. In fact, banks there were more likely to be issuing warnings about digital currencies than getting involved in any related activity.

It was the fall of Mt Gox in Japan and the Chinese central bank’s crackdown on bitcoin exchanges, events that both took place in 2014, that resulted in early barriers among financial institutions in those nations.

However, the recent upsurge in the popularity of blockchain technology in the global finance sector seems to have at least somewhat laid those concerns to rest. Now, the region’s banking sector is showing the same growing enthusiasm for the tech’s disruptive potential in banking that can be seen in Europe and North America.  READ MORE.

 (2/15/2017)  Leading Japanese Banks Invest Into Bitcoin Exchange, Aim at Global Remittances Market


Japan’s leading banking groups are pouring money into the country’s largest Bitcoin exchange, BitFlyer. The experiment they are about to perform means a lot for the global financial services market.

The $1.75 mln funding comes from Mizuho Financial Group, Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group and Dai-ichi Life Insurance, a part of Dai-ichi Life Holdings.


(2/14/2017)  Japan’s 3 Megabanks Have All Invested in Japan’s Biggest Bitcoin Exchange

Japan’s largest banks Mitsubishi UFJ, Mizuho and SMBC are now investors in bitFlyer, Japan’s largest bitcoin exchange.

In an announcement today, bitFlyer, Japan’s largest bitcoin exchange and blockchain services company, revealed fresh funding from Mizuho Capital and SMBC Venture Capital, both of which are the investment arms of the Mizuho Banking Corporation and the Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation respectively. The two banking corporations join Mitsubishi UFJ as investors in bitFlyer. Mitsubishi UFJ Capital participated in a ¥510 million ($4.5 million) round of funding in August 2015.

Altogether, all three of Japan’s megabanks have now invested in the country’s leading bitcoin exchange.  READ MORE

(2/12/2017)  The Philippines Officially Legitimize Bitcoin as Payment Method

Bankgko Sentral ng Pilipinas, hereinafter BSP, is officially regulating local Philippine Bitcoin exchanges as remittance companies and recognizing Bitcoin as a legitimate payment method.

Earlier this month, BSP Deputy Governor Nestor Espenilla announced the plans of the Philippine Central Bank to issue a proper regulatory framework for Bitcoin users, exchanges and companies. Espenilla emphasized the exponential growth of Bitcoin within the country, stating that monthly Bitcoin volumes increased from $1 mln to $6 mln a month in a year.  READ MORE.

(1/17/2017)  Japan Rises To Become 2nd Biggest Bitcoin Trader In The World

Counterparty Foundation Community Director Koji Higashi has agreed that Japan’s future in Bitcoin is an “upward trend” and could challenge China in trading volume.

His comments follow mainstream media alleging the number of Japanese outlets accepting Bitcoin had quadrupled to over 4,000 in 2016 alone.

In a blog post Monday, Higashi said that in contrast to China’s falling trading volumes due to exchange inspections and uncertainty over legislation, Japan’s legal setup was fostering increased crypto adoption.  READ MORE.

(1/10/2017)  Bitcoin Boom in Japan: Merchant Adoption Grows Four-Fold in One Year

From less than a thousand, the number of merchants accepting Bitcoin in Japan has grown by more than four times in the last twelve months, according to a new survey by ResuPress Inc, the company that runs Coincheck, one of the major Bitcoin exchanges in the country.

Aside from the Bitcoin exchange, ResuPress also provides Bitcoin payment processing for merchants very similar to the service BitPay offers.

Tuur Demeester explains what is Bitcoin and how he discovered it. He says Bitcoin is important because it is private money and that this is and will be a concern of many people. Demeester tells that while he was looking for solutions to the financial system and spending time in Latin America to get to know how people act, he found Bitcoin in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

He says Bitcoin is useful in many ways and one of the benefits is that there´s no person in the middle in order to do a transaction or store capital. Also says that Bitcoin is going through a process called hyper-monetization. In the beginning it was something new and kind of a game, but now has evolutioned.

He adds that exists a situation of central financial planning and that if we want to change things, we have to build a new paradigm and that´s what is happening with Bitcoin. He explains that Bitcoin is a payment platform and also a protocol like internet, and that there are many developments still to come. Finally he explains how to find Bitcoin in Guatemala and invites people to search for it and learn about this new world of money.
